Why does cold medicine taste like total a$$?

Why don't they add some artificial flavor to the $hit so it doesn't taste like pure $hit? This is 2011 for bucks sakes I am pretty sure the pharmaceutical drug companies have the technology to pull that off. I would pay an extra couple dollars for a bottle if it helped my cold and didn't taste like diarrhea.
