In the US why aren't women allowed to fight on the frontline in the army?

Women are usually physically weaker than men but strength doesn't matter so much in battle today. Close combat melee fighting is extremely rare, most fighting is done by firing guns or firing a missile from a helicopter or submarine. Women can pull a trigger or push a button just as well as a man can.
